Articles: Expert 2

Final Mixed Practice Set.

Expert Rule Summary

In this final level, we address the intersection of abstract nouns and specific contexts, which often trips up even advanced speakers.

History & Subjects

General subjects (History, Science) use no article. However, when specified (the history of India), the definite article ‘the’ is mandatory.

Uncountable Nuances

‘Information’ is uncountable and takes no article (x useful information). To make it countable, you must add a partitive: a useful piece of information.

The Comparative Identifiers

We use ‘the’ for superlatives (the best teacher) and ordinal identifiers (the only girl), ensuring the noun is clearly distinguished from the rest of the group.

Final FAQs

1. Why ‘a European’ and ‘an honorable judge’?
It’s always about the initial sound. ‘European’ sounds like ‘yu’ (consonant), while ‘honorable’ has a silent ‘h’, starting with ‘o’ (vowel).

2. What is a correlative structure?
These are parallel phrases like ‘The more… the less…’. Both comparatives must be preceded by ‘the’ to show a direct relationship between the two actions.
